trading and yoga

Postby 1992 DREAM TEAM » Mon Aug 22, 2011 10:56 am

Yoga is the ability to direct the mind exclusively towards an object and sustain that direction without any distractions.

Then the ability to understand the object fully and correctly is apparent.

The ability to understand the object is simply replaced by the mind's conception of that object or by total lack of comprehension.

There are five activities of the mind. Each of them can be beneficial and each can cause problems.

The five activities are comprehension, misapprehension, imagination, deep sleep, and memory.

Comprehension is based on direct observation of the object, inference, and reference to reliable authorities.

Misapprehension is that comprehension is taken to be correct until more favorable conditions reveal the actual nature of the object.

Imagination is the comprehension of an object based only on words and expressions, even though the object is absent.

Deep sleep is when the mind is overcome with heaviness and no other activities are present.

Memory is the mental retention of a conscious experience.

Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, originating in ancient India, whose goal is the attainment of a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. The word is associated with meditative practices in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism.

"...Yoga attempts to create a state in which we are always present *really present* in every action, in every moment.

The advantage of attentiveness is that we perform each task better and at the same time are conscious of our actions. The possibility of making mistakes becomes correspondingly smaller the more our attention develops. When we are attentive to our actions we are not prisoners of our habits...Instead there is the possibility of considering our actions fresh and so avoiding thoughtless repetition."

"So we see that there are many possible ways of understanding the meaning of the word "yoga". Yoga has its roots in Indian thought, but its content is universal because it is about the means by which we can make the changes we desire in our lives. The actual practice of yoga takes each person in a different direction. It is not necessary to subscribe to any particular ideas of God in order to follow the yoga path. The practice of yoga only requires us to act and be attentive in our actions. Each of us is required to pay careful attention to the direction we are taking so that we know where we are going and how we are going to get there; this careful observation will enable us to discover something new."

I will have to consider adding yoga exercises into pre-trading hours. :D

Try this before your next session, it only takes a few minutes. If you tend to be congested, you might want to do a nasal wash or blow your nose before. Steamy shower works, too.

Alternate Nostril Breathing:

Sit cross-legged or in a chair, whichever is more comfortable. Remember to relax and sit up straight, have some dignity! Using one hand, fold the index and third finger down. Touch the tip of your thumb and ring finger together and let the little finger rest gently aside the ring finger.

Bow your head slightly downward like you're putting a hood on. As you bow, let your awareness curve back into itself, cultivating a reflective state. Bring your hand up, open ring and thumb finger, and place them on the sides of your nostrils (don't pinch! lol)

Breathe naturally, try to let it come by itself, gently close your eyes.

0. Close the left nostril and exhale completely out the the right nostril
1. Inhale through the right nostril.
2. Close the right nostril and exhale through the left nostril.
3. Inhale through the left nostril.
4. Close the left nostril and exhale through the right nostril.

This completes one cycle. Repeat from 1 and continue for up to 20 cycles. Check that you are not slouching forward with your chest and keeping your breastbone upright (remember, dignity!). Open your eyes every 4-5 cycles to check. Also make sure you are not pressing so hard you are moving your septum or head off center.

When you are done, take a few moments to observe how you feel. How would you describe your state of mind?

Thanks.

The key for me to achieving great presence has always been through breathing exercises, but it has entirely been through the mouth. Interested to try this and see how it compares.

Did you know...air enters alternately through the right and left nostrils throughout the course of the day. Blood shifts from one to the other every 90 min or so causing one to open and the other to congest a little. Studies show that when the left nostril is open, the right side of the brain is more dominant, and when the right side is open, the the left brain is more dominant.

This phenomenon was noticed thousands of years ago and exercises were developed to try and help achieve balance.

yes :)

just adding something a little deeper

Ask this question, what starts before ... every feeling, every thought, every task, everything?

The answer is your breath ... so do it and do it well
