How to stop data usage from facebook?

I just got my htc hd7 and its great. BUT.
i added facebook to my phone, so my contact images update and i can get feeds of what they are up to. i was hoping that it would only search for recent feeds when i wanted to look. but it looks like, all the time im connected to the internet on wifi or 3g, it is pulling feeds from the internet. surely this uses alot of data usage?
I decided to turn off data usage so it doesnt always keep downloading new feeds from facebook. but then i wanted to look at a website, then found that my phone has downloaded feeds to my facebook. why doesnt it just update feeds when i go onto a contact or look at whats new.

PLUS i cant find an app or anything which tells me how much data usage i am using. and o2 only give me my data usage as 0.7GB for example. but i want to know down to the mb how much i am using. knowing roughly to the closest 50mb how much data i am using is very impractical. i have to keep looking until it goes down to 0.6. then il know ive used AROUND 100mb.
