Alex,
thanks for the suggestion of Winzip .... I downloaded the new version and still could not open my .rar file ... guess I will keep looking ... are you able to open .rar files with your Winzip?...if so I must be doing something amiss... even so I still appreciate your thoughtfulness ....

digit,
for years I am now using "Total Commander" - it's the best file manager for Windows. It can delve into the archive files as if they were standard folders. It supports ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE internally and you can configure any other archive to cooperate with TotalCommander externally.

Michal,
thanks for the link and your endorsement...I will download the trial version and give it a try...I also just found WINrar which looks pretty good but not as expansive (at first glance) as Total Commander...either way looks as though I am in business for opening those .rar files...thank you again for helping me out...

no, you can download up to 100M per hour without any payments, just click on *Free*, wait about 60 sec /depends on size of the file/, enter the code that will apper after timer complete and download the file.
