'Adding' is simply the thing that you do prior to moving your stop loss to normalize risk.

If trading is placing and trailing stops then when would you add?

The moment you are comfortable with a stop that is closer to the current price.

For a short time you can move price from 2+ day extremes to say H4 swings; you just need to be aware
of the need to re-position your stop back at a long term extreme prior to holding.

The only way that you can survive long term trends is to keep your stops out of short term ranges.
