Well, original banknotes were just IOU's for a piece of gold/silver, so I guess they can do the same with any "thing". We come full circle when they stop backing the bitcoin banknotes with actual bitcoin.

True enough.
I was thinking more of the anonymity aspect of it. Untraceable transactions. Not very untraceable if you have to go hand over a bit of paper.
