I would like to start Avocado and Durian trees from seed (healthy fats).

To start tropical trees, you need to grow them on a heating pad (like what this guy is doing only with the jars on a heating pad).

I was thinking about later lining a pot with a heating pad & thick layer of plastic to keep the soil warm & using T5 grow lights.

I was going to plant Olive trees but Israel is planting a million of them and many other countries, including India, are planting them as well so the price of Olive oil will probably be very low in the future.

My core diet is carbs & healthy fats; most of the time I eat potatoes smothered in virgin olive oil w/ black pepper.

From personal experimentation, I believe that a well rounded diet is:
1) root vegetables
2) stems
3) leafy greens
4) seeds
5) fruit

I don't eat meat, cheese, nuts, or even eggs.

I would like to grow 90% or more of my own food.

The guy in the Avocado video hit it on the head before I could. Are you planning to bee keep in said biodome? That's what I'd really like to start down here, produce my own Honey and Bee Pollen.

As someone who has used a little hydroponics for speeding up the propagation of super slow growing cacti, I have to say that I endlessly prefer dirt, composting, and some good ol' mycelium

Lots of trees are self pollinating in the sense that they don't need another tree to cross pollinate with, but they still require a bug or a person to pollinate them. The odds of it happening without a pollinating insect or your careful attention is slim.

I've had to do this with cacti as well because they don't all flower at the same time and when they do flower it's rare.

Vanilla is so expensive because only 1 insect in the world pollinates them so it has to be done by hand and the flowers are only open for 8 - 12 hours. It require constant attention. Especially if you're trying to farm a sustainable quantity

My understanding is that avocado trees won't grow up north, you might be able to start them but will it actually grow and produce avocados?

That's why I had never tried it before, but I could be wrong...

Plus they would not survive the winter, you would have to have like a heated greenhouse to pull it off...

Growing food is way more easier in the south, can grow so much more varieties and nearly all year long.

I love olive oil. I use it ALL THE TIME.

I have this spray bottle that I put it in with a pump and can spray it on various things.

Olive oil from Turkey/Italy is the best!

Better to try and fail than to have never tried at all

I've seen people get away with frost wrapping their trees and laying heavy mulch to protect the roots.

Anything is possible if your mind is focused on a solution.

I'm very busy so I don't have the time to produce my own vegetables but I've been planting fruit for the last year or so. It'll be another few years before I really start to get a harvest from them but at the time period I've got

Starfruit
Lemon
Kaffir Lime
Guava
Soursop
Navel Orange
Blood Orange
Mango
Papaya!
Jack fruit
Bananas
and Coconut Palms

I've been toying with some sugar cane, I can't say for certain if that will pan out how I'd like.

as well as a few flowering plants and some assorted cacti of a rare and collectible nature

My family's land sits on 2.5 acres that I've been steadily trying to turn into my own subsistence farm

Looks good Karma,

I'm just a little too far north to be able to grow most of those things.

Olive Oil Mister

MO -----^

You want the kind that you pour in the olive oil and pump it up, so it sprays out, versus squirts like a normal spray bottle
